Normal Testosterone Levels by Age
By TRTGuide Editorial Team · Last updated: April 1, 2026
Testosterone ranges shift over time, and lab interpretation is not just one number. This guide helps you understand age-based context, common low-T thresholds, and what to discuss with your provider.
You can also use the TRT Symptom Checker to organize symptoms before booking care.
Typical Total Testosterone Ranges by Age
| Age range | Typical total testosterone |
|---|---|
| 20-29 | ~400-1,000 ng/dL |
| 30-39 | ~350-950 ng/dL |
| 40-49 | ~300-900 ng/dL |
| 50-59 | ~250-850 ng/dL |
| 60-69 | ~200-800 ng/dL |
| 70+ | ~200-750 ng/dL |
These are general ranges and can vary by lab. Symptoms and repeated morning tests matter more than a single isolated reading.
What Counts as Low?
Many clinical workflows start around 300 ng/dL for low testosterone evaluation, often requiring two separate morning draws plus symptom alignment before diagnosis.
Total Testosterone vs Free Testosterone
Total testosterone can appear "normal" while free testosterone is low, especially when SHBG is elevated. If symptoms persist, ask your provider to evaluate free testosterone and SHBG alongside total testosterone.
When To Follow Up
If your result is borderline or you have ongoing symptoms, the next step is usually repeat testing and a full clinical review. Before your visit, read What to Expect at Your First TRT Appointment.
